Undergraduate Research Stipends

Building on UNC Asheville’s legacy as a national leader in undergraduate research, SIGP offers research stipends to provide UNCA students majoring in STEM fields with opportunities to conduct meaningful research with faculty mentors. Funding of up to $3,000 may be requested to cover material costs, time spent conducting research, and travel to present projects at scholarly functions. Applications for research funding in Fall 2024 are being accepted on a rolling basis while funding is available. Interested students are invited to apply here.

Attendance at National AISES Meetings

The UNC Asheville SIGP Program supports students’ participation in annual American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) conferences. These events provide opportunities for exchanges with Native students in STEM fields along with professionals in academia and industry. If you are a UNC Asheville student interested in attending a national or regional AISES meeting, please reach out to our program directors for information about financial support.

Off-Campus Research Experiences

The UNC Asheville SIGP program can offer travel support for Sloan Scholars to visit SIGP partner institutions. These visits are designed to provide opportunities for students to engage in research experiences, social activities, and workshops on applying to graduate school.

Graduate School Visits

Funds are available through SIGP to help UNC Asheville students explore graduate school opportunities across STEM and non-STEM related fields at one of the SIGP partner schools. During campus visits, students can engage with professors and other Indigenous students to better understand the culture and future possibilities of graduate school. If you are a UNC Asheville student applying to a graduate program at a SIGP partner school, please reach out to our program directors for information about financial support.
